First Teams - 1984

The first Global Volunteers team in February, 1984, led by Bud Philbrook, worked for two weeks in Woburn Lawn, Jamaica — in the legendary Blue Mountains.  We were invited by the “Past Students Association” to help the community improve their self-sufficiency and to help young adults build an economic base for remaining in the community.  Two teams of four volunteers - Bud Philbrook, Todd Lefko, Milo Cutter, and Karen Ringham, laid the foundation for Global Volunteers in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica in 1984, and in November of the same year, Bud Philbrook returned with Terri Hudoba, Teresa Harrel, Kim Schrup and Claudette Philbrook to stabilize the volunteer effort.  At this time, Global Volunteers was considered a “grand experiment” in international service, and very few believed the programs would grow to more than a handful each year.

Now 25 years later, we remain steadfast in partnership with the Jamaican people…although the “Past Students” are now the elders of Woburn Lawn, and our work over the years has broadened and changed with the times.
